About Us

We strongly believe in the value of open access to knowledge and technology to inspire and build communities among people with diverse skills and backgrounds.

The Contour Project was launched in 2019 as an independent spin-off organization initially inspired by HarassMap Egypt. Our mission grew out of the increasing number of requests we received from groups and individuals around the world wishing to integrate crowdmapping and offline work to tackle social issues in their communities.

Despite the global spread of digital activism, combining online and offline approaches for change remains a challenge especially since the resources that were once free are disappearing. This seems to have had a corporatizing effect that requires for-profit purchase of digital tools and support plans, excluding and further marginalizing activists with limited resources.

To pursue our mission for open access to technology and knowledge for social change, we have launched the Contour Project with our main program: Crowdmapping for Social Change. We plan to add additional movement-building elements and research in the coming year.

We provide:

  • Adaptable crowdmapping platform
  • Knowledge sharing
  • Online mentoring and support

The Contour Project is registered in the US as a 501(c)3 non-profit.
